Press Release: DePaul School of Music

Chicago – DePaul University’s School of Music will be performing Gilbert & Sullivan’s Opera, The Gondoliers, March 11th through 13th at the Merle Reskin Theatre located at 60 East Balbo Drive in the South Loop.

The Gondoliers or “The King of Barataria” is a highly political yet comedic and musical masterpiece set in 1871 written and composed by the well known and influential lyricist and composer team, Gilbert & Sullivan. His past works include The Mikado, Patience, and H.M.S. Pinafore.

In this production, two Venetian gondoliers marry the loves of their lives only to discover that one of them is the crown prince of the non-existent Barataria. The road to discover which of the two will be crowned is through whitty and windy singing and dancing. The prince’s foster mother, Inez, assists in solving the mystery to finally reveal who will become King and who will remain as just another “Gondolieri.”

The lively and talented cast of The Gondoliers is strictly undergraduate and graduate students of the world-renowned School of Music at DePaul University. The School of Music holds about 400 students seeking a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Performance, Composition, or Music Education among other areas. This particular performance is double casted in order to showcase all of the amazing student actors and actresses.

The opera was directed by Michael La Tour who is a professional actor, singer, dancer, and producer from The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Steven Mosteller, is making his debut as DePaul Opera Theatre’s newly appointed music director after spending the last fifteen years as a New York City Opera conductor and Music Director at The New Jersey Opera.

Tickets to The Gondoliers are available now and range from $5 to $25. In order to garner support, all DePaul University students as well as any high school or college student with a valid school identification card will be allowed in for free. The seats are available on a first come, first serve basis; therefore, early arrival is strongly suggested!

The show premieres Friday, March 11th at 7:30 PM at the Merle Reskin Theatre located at 60 East Balbo Drive in the South Loop. Encore performances will be held Saturday, the 12th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, the 13th at 2:00 PM.
