Blogging: Family Summer Adventures on a Budget!

QuickQuid

Before you know it, school will be out for the summer! As nice as it will be to have your children at home, the summer season can quickly become extremely pricey. How can you afford to keep them entertained? Don’t fret! We’ve rounded up ten summer activities that won’t hurt your pocketbook:

1. Beach Day

Sunshine, sandcastles, swimming and a picnic — spend an entire afternoon with your family at the beach catching some rays. If you’re up for it, stick around for the sunset to have a bonfire and roast some marshmallows.

2. Air Shows

An air show is an outdoor event where aviators display their flying skills and perform aerial displays. Many of the air shows throughout the summer offer free family days and often have discounted tickets for children on other days. But don’t just look up — there are wonderful exhibitions on the ground too.

3. Camping

Camping is an economically sound way to take your family on a short holiday this summer. So dust off the sleeping bags, buy or borrow a tent, pack food to grill, and get the kids ready to explore nature’s finest offerings. If there are no campgrounds near your home, enjoy some backyard camping!

4. Biking

Biking with your family is an inexpensive and healthy activity to do this summer. Map out locations to stop and have lunch, get ice cream, or locate landmarks around your city to visit! Many cities encourage family cycling and host family biking afternoons. If you don’t own a bike, don’t fret — contact a local bike shop because many rent them out daily.

5. Outdoor Cinema

Summer evenings are a wonderful excuse to be outside. An even better excuse is a free movie! Local parks often host family-friendly film screenings in the open air throughout the summer months. Contact the park in your area or look at their website to see what movie is playing next. Grab a blanket and pack some snacks — this is a perfect summer family evening.

6. Professional Sporting Events

This summer, take your family to watch a game and see their favourite athlete play live! Professional sports teams typically have a weekly designated family day where tickets are discounted. You can also try and get another family involved to get an even cheaper group ticket rate.

7. Music Festivals

Gather up your kids for a day of live music! Whether your family likes to listen to jazz or rock, there are free music festivals to suit everyone’s taste. Don’t forget to bring your camera either — you never know what rock star your child could meet!

8. Museum & Gallery Trips

Does your family enjoy history? How about paintings or sculptures? Throughout the summer, museums and galleries offer free visits for children and occasionally entire families. Look up the ones in your area to plan a fun, but educational daytime adventure.

9. Play in the Park

Summer is all about being outdoors. Plan a park day with your family to simply enjoy each other’s company over a picnic. Contact the parks in your community or visit their website, because many host free lessons in football, tennis and swimming.

10. Plant a Garden

Get your hands dirty this summer! Plant your favourite fruits and vegetables with your family to create a summer-long project and hobby. Eventually you will begin to see the fruits (and vegetables) of your labour.
