Eating Healthy On Vacation

Are you trying to eat healthier and practice portion control? Don’t let your holiday ruin the progress you have made with a new healthy lifestyle! If you’re taking holiday sometime soon, here are a few applicable tips on maintaining a healthy diet while travelling.

Find the Supermarket. As soon as you land at your destination, find the nearest supermarket! Load up on healthy snacks like yoghurt, fruit, nuts, and pre-washed, ready-to-eat options. When you’re out and sightseeing, be sure to pack your noshes in your purse or bag to avoid having to dine out. Your wallet and your waistline will thank you!

Hold the Sauce! It’s no secret that sauces and toppings carry a bunch of unnecessary calories. Although they may make your meal taste better, try to avoid them at all costs while dining out. Instead, opt for fatty fish like salmon, grilled meats, fresh salads with dressing on the side, or wraps if you’re on the go.

Dine Out… Just Once! Of course while you’re on holiday, you want to try the new and exciting cuisine in the area. As opposed to eating every meal at a different restaurant, choose just one each day. Search for local establishments that use fresh products, and focus on fruits, vegetables and meats. Food that is not covered in sauces and toppings are typically the healthiest (see above).

Split Entrees. Did you know that typical entrees at restaurants are served with enough food for two people? If you’re dining out with a group of four on your vacation, think about selecting just two or three entrees and splitting them. Remember, eating less of an unhealthy item is still better than enjoying the entire plate by yourself!

Selectively Splurge. You’re on holiday and you should treat yourself. If you know there is a specific sweet or entree you want to try, be certain to eat light throughout the day. Also, try to be selective. For example, if the restaurant you are dining at offers a breadbasket, avoid it — you can have bread anytime at home!

Tips

1.If you are taking holiday for a lengthy period of time and are concerned about putting on some extra weight — make time for daily exercise! Cardio like running outdoors will allow you to burn some calories while sightseeing.

2. Although you are watching your calorie intake, enjoy the culture of the area you’re visiting! Don’t turn items down for fear of unhealthy ingredients. Just ask how they’re prepared!

3. Fill up on healthy foods at breakfast or lunch like fruit, salad and oatmeal. Do this just in case you’re forced to dine out for the remainder of the day!

4. Before arriving at your destination, pack or purchase a reusable water bottle. Sodas and other sweet beverages pack hundreds of unnecessary extra calories you just don’t need. Hydration is key!
